Who & What IS The League of Women Voters

Passionate. Impartial. Trusted. Determined advocates for civil discourse, civil liberty and good government.

This is how the public, and government, describes this most trusted organization in american politics.

"Politics: the science and art of government." These are the words used as definition by the Oxford English Dictionary.

Are these the words you use to describe politics and politicians?
The League of Women Voters believes, passionately, that every citizen in this country has the right to expect that our elected officials aspire to practice, with honesty and integrity, "the science and art of government."

Now, more than ever, the League of Women Voters of Manistee County, urges you to join us.
Join us as we seek solutions to regional issues. Join us as we hold all our elected officials accountable to the citizens they represent. Join us as we seek to shine a light in dark places. Join us so, together, we can focus on building our future here in Manistee and Michigan - not stay mired in the schoolyard bickering of our partisan past. We are better than that. We can do better than that.

On four Wednesdays in October, a lively group of Manistee County citizens joined us for "Hot Topics and Hot Pizza!"
Together we politely, but adamantly, listed which issues will drive us to the Ballot Box in 2008. Together, we listed commonsense options and solutions. Together, we know, we have motivated good people in Manistee County to run for elected office in 2008 rather than sit on the sidelines - again.

This is who today's League of Women Voters members are - men and women just like you: men and women who can think, create actions from those ideas, and be decisive without being partisan. For those who have choosen to "Run, Manistee, RUN in 2008!" we salute you. Together we will have fulfilled our goal - to grow and nurture democracy one vote at a time.

As we look forward to 2008, Manistee County League of Women Voters has now received its marching orders from our community.

You asked for Candidate Forums, for both primary and general elections, conducted according to the strict LWV Rules of Conduct. All candidates will be asked to agree to those Rules beforehand to answer questions not sling mud.
You asked for us to produce a Manistee County Voter Guide for local races. And we know now we can count on the support of the local media to fulfill that duty. You want to know who your choices are and what they represent. In 2006, our brand new Manistee LWV distributed more copies of the statewide LWV Voter Guide than any other League! This is how seriously you wanted information then and we have no doubt that will be amplified in 2008.
You asked us to hold forums on such wide ranging issues as a regional approach to solid waste and delivery of cooperative, cost efficient rural services.

And now we need to ask you to play your part - join us!
Become a Member. BE part of the solution. Play your part to support this trusted, impartial, passionate voice for civil discourse.

When someone asks us, "so, what do I get out of being a Member?", we simply state, "the satisfaction of holding everyone in public life to the standard of education, civility and honesty you would expect of yourself or your child."
Membership returns no monetary reward, no perks, no discounts - only the satisfaction of achievement and the companionship of good folks just like you who want to join a team that makes a difference.

Can you see yourself contributing to, or playing an active part in making that difference?
We ask, if time is at a premium for you, that you consider contributing to our membership scholarship fund which allows us to extend membership to those of limited financial means. And please remember, everyone is welcome at our meetings and forums - regardless - period!

The primary mission of the LWV, which meets monthly on the first Wednesday, is to “educate its members and the public at large on the role and responsibilities of fair and open government, how government works and how policy decisions affect our community, and to act as an impartial forum for civil discussion”.
